The most common wine varieties in Istria

Istria abounds in vineyards and is known for its varied range of white and red wines. Along with traditional varieties such as Teran (Refosko) and Istrian Malvasia, other international varieties are also being cultivated, such as Chardonnay, Pinot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Agricultural Institute from Poreč, founded in 1875, fosters professional wine growing and quality production of wines.

The Institute, headed by its director, dr. Đordano Peršurić, regularly examines other wine varieties that are not widespread in the region.

On one occasion we paid a visit to dr. Peršurić at the Institute and tried a very good Riesling from test vineyards, and we were pleasantly surprised. Muscat varieties are also widespread in Istria.

This guide will introduce a range of Istrian wines, which never fail to delight local and foreign lovers of good wine.
